PERFORMANCE EXHAUST PACKAGES:
Off the showroom floor, the Suzuki DR-Z400S and DR-Z400SM are tuned more for fuel mileage and emissions, rather than performance. This makes the bike feel a little bit "anemic", but luckily there are a few things you can do to improve the bikes overall performance.
To maximize performance and improve ride-ablity of your DR-Z400S or DR-Z400SM, we recommend that you...
replace the entire exhaust system (muffler AND header) with a lightweight free-flowing exhaust
re-jet the carburetor to adjust the bikes fueling
replace the stock air filter with a better flowing air filter
do 3x3 airbox mod to the bikes stock airbox
Doing these simple things will greatly improve the bikes overall performance, making it much more fun to ride, it'll sound a lot better, and you'll drop a little bit of weight at the same time (the stock exhaust isheavy).
We've put together a few Performance Exhaust Packages that will give you everything you need to replace the bikes exhaust system, re-jet the carburetor, and replace the stock air filter. All of the packages below will provide nearly identical performance gains, but each has different pros and cons. Read the descriptions below for more details...
OPTION 1: FMF PowerCore 4 Performance Package (shown above)
We have this exact exhaust system on our 2016 DR-Z400SM Project Bike. The PowerCore4 muffler with PowerBomb header is an excellent exhaust system for riders who want to maximize performance and don't mind a slightly louder exhaust. It is one of our favorite exhaust systems for street riding like we do with our DRZ SM. Out of the four packages we offer, this one is going to be slightly louder than the FMF Q4 and Yoshimura RS-2, but a little bit quieter than the MRD Z-Pro System. It comes fitted with a removable USFS approved spark arrestor, and an optional quiet insert is available through FMF.

OPTION 2: FMF Q4 Performance Package (shown above)
We've had this exact exhaust system on our 2008 DR-Z400SM Project Bike. The Q4 muffler with PowerBomb header provides excellent performance gains, while being the quietest aftermarket exhaust available for the DRZ. It's louder and has a much better sound than the stock exhaust, but if you're looking for something on the quiet side, this is the one for you. It comes fitted with a USFS approved spark arrestor. This is our favorite exhaust system if you do a lot of off-road riding with your DR-Z400S (or DR-Z400SM).

OPTION 3: Yoshimura RS-2 Performance Exhaust Package (shown above)
We currently have this exact exhaust system on our 2008 Suzuki DR-Z400SM Project Bike. The RS-2 package provides excellent performance gains, beautiful fit and finish, and a great overall sound. From a sound level standpoint, it is slightly louder than the FMF Q4 exhaust, but slightly quieter than the FMF PowerCore4 exhaust. The RS-2 Muffler is available in either Carbon Fiber or Aluminum and comes fitted with a removable USFS approved spark arrestor. The Yoshimura header pipe includes a laser-etched heat shield.

OPTION 4: MRD Z-Pro Performance Exhaust Package (shown above)
MRD Z-Pro pipes are hand built from 18 gauge 304 SS and 6061 aluminum, and tig welded by owner Dave Harryman. These are not over priced, stamped out, mass produced pipes, and have a high quality hand fabricated look. MRD pipes have superior dimensions and flow better than stock, resulting in noticeable power gains. The Z-PRO system was developed to support a fully modified DRZ400 engine and develops maximum HP. The Z-Pro Muffler is available in a standard length and shorty version, which is about 2" shorter. Out of the four packages we offer, this exhaust system is going to be the loudest, especially the shorty version.

The performance exhaust packages outlined above will take care of the exhaust side of the equation, but while you're at it, most riders will also replace their bikes stock air filter with something that flows air better.
In our performance exhaust packages, we allow you to add an air filter to the package. You have two options, either a K&N Air Filter or a No Toil Foam Air Filter. We recommend the K&N Filter if you are doing mostly street riding like we do with our DR-Z400SM project bikes. If you are riding off-road or in very dusty conditions, we like the No Toil Air Filters. Both of our DRZ project bikes have K&N Filters installed (shown in photo above).
