This Honda CRF450RL dual sport build was inspired by the recent CRF450RL Budget Supermoto Build we did, and basically it shows 4 or 5 of the first and most important things to do to your CRF450RL to make it a better dual sport bike. These are great bikes out of the box, but there are definitely improvements to be made.

This "budget build" is an excellent starting point for what to do to your bike, and then as you ride the bike more, you will figure out what else you want to upgrade. Then, as your budget allows, do the things that improve the bike for the type of riding YOU do with it.

Below we’ve compiled a short list of products we think are the best way to get started building your CRF450L/RL dual sport without breaking the bank…

  • VORTEX X10 ECU

  • IMS 3 GALLON GAS TANK

  • ZETA PRO ARMOR HANDGUARD PACKAGE

  • 12OCLOCKLABS INTEGRATED TAIL LIGHT KIT

  • DOUBLE TAKE DUAL SPORT MIRRORS

Keep reading below for more in-depth details…

    Honda CRF450RL Vortex X10 ECU

    VORTEX X10 ECU…
The Honda CRF450L/RL is notorious for not running quite right out of the box, thanks to strict emissions requirements Honda had to adhere to. A Vortex ECU is one of the best ways to get the bike running properly. If you are keeping your stock exhaust at first, the Vortex ECU (shown above) has a specific map for that exhaust, and it will make the bike run much better, helping get rid of that low RPM stumbling/stalling, and pretty much eliminates the snatchy on/off throttle that can make the bike hard to ride, plus it will add more power/torque, especially at the lower end of the powerband. And later when your budget allows, you can add an aftermarket exhaust and hi-flow air filter, then just switch the map on the ECU to one of the pre-loaded Yoshimura or FMF maps, to get even more power and performance out of the bike.

Honda CRF450RL IMS 3 Gallon Tank

    IMS 3 GALLON GAS / FUEL TANK…
From the factory, the Honda CRF450L / CRF450RL comes with a tiny 2 gallon fuel tank. This would be fine for a motocross bike, but for a bike designed to be ridden back and forth to the off-road trails, or even take on longer trips, that tank size is not ideal. IMS Products to the rescue with their 3 gallon gas tank, which gives you another 50-75 miles of range (depending on how you ride). It's available in either Black or Natural, the latter allowing you to see the fuel level through the tank. Very easy installation using the stock fuel pump, and your low fuel light will still work properly.

Honda CRF450RL Zeta PRO Armor Handguards

    ZETA PRO ARMOR HANDGUARD PACKAGE…
Proper handguards are one of the first things many of our customers do to their CRF450RL's. The bike comes with cheap plastic deflectors from the factory, and those are mostly useless, so on our bikes we pulled those off and went with our Zeta PRO Armor handguards (shown above). We have a package deal that allows you to configure the hanguards just the way you want them, even adding things like integrated LED turn signals as an option. We like handguards for a couple reasons, first off they look great on these bikes, plus they will help protect the handlebars and controls if you were to drop the bike, and lastly they will block wind if you’re out riding on those colder fall and winter days.

Honda CRF450RL 12oClockLabs Integrated Tail Light Kit

    12OCLOCKLABS INTEGRATED TAIL LIGHT KIT…
If you want to really improve the looks of your CRF450L/RL, cleaning up the back fender area makes a world of difference. 12oClockLabs offers an integrated tail light kit that replaces the stock tail light and license plate mount with a much cleaner design. The LED’s are super bright, and the kit also has safety brake pulsing as a nice safety feature. You can use this tail light with the stock turn signals if you want (as shown above), or you can remove them and use the integrated turn signals, where the turn signals flash within the brake light itself.

    Honda CRF450RL Dual Sport Mirrors

    DOUBLE TAKE DUAL SPORT MIRRORS…
If you do a mix of street and off-road riding, we recommend the new DoubleTake Dual Sport Mirrors (shown above on our CRF300L). These mirrors utilize Doubletake's new Dual Sport mirror and their proprietary mounting arms and base kits that allow easy installation/removal without tools, and also easy adjustment once mounted on the bike. You can even fold them down out of the way when not in use. The mirrors themselves are even guaranteed against breakage by Doubletake.

  • Double Take Dual Sport Mirrors - Honda CRF450RL

Honda CRF450RL Zeta PRO Handguards with Integrated Mirrors

INTEGRATED MIRROR KIT - ZETA PRO HANDGUARDS…
As an option to the Double Take Mirrors above, if you just want very basic and inexpensive mirrors, we offer mirrors that can be ordered as an option with some of our Zeta Armor and PRO Armor handguards. These mirrors look great because they are tucked into the handguard protectors and therefore are pretty hidden, which also makes them less likely to get damaged in a drop or crash. Functionally they work pretty good, but you can't see out of them as well as the Double Take and Supermoto mirrors we carry. The mirror itself is a small convex design, that rotates so you can adjust its angle, and it offers good visibility to your sides. But because its mounted inside the handguard, and not out very far to the sides, it doesn't offer the best visibility of what is directly behind you.

Honda CRF450RL Moose / AXP Skid Plate

HONORABLE MENTION #1… A BETTER SKID PLATE !
Honda did put a small plastic skid plate on the bike, that does offer atleast some protection. However, if you plan on doing a lot of off-road riding, a more substantial skid plate is worth it. Our choice would be the one from Moose / AXP Racing, which is a hefty 8mm thick plastic design that incorporates a rear shock linkage guard. See the link below...

  • Moose / AXP Racing PRO LG Skid Plate - Honda CRF450RL

HONORABLE MENTION #2… BETTER TIRES !
Honda didn't spec this bike with the best tires, so upgrading those will make a world of difference off-road, and also on the street! See our tire guide below...
