CURRENT SETUP:
Our 2024 Yamaha MT-09 SP Project Bike currently has the following mods and accessories...
PROTECTION:
For the first round of modifications to the bike, we wanted to install some sort of crash protection, as well as a radiator guard. We've used Evotech Performance products on a few of our project bikes in the past, and it's always top quality, simple to install, and very nice looking...
COCKPIT:
One of my first minor complaints with our new MT-09 SP was the stock mirrors. First I didn't care for the look of them, and second visibility was pretty bad, especially with the left side mirror, which has you looking right at your shoulder. We pulled the OEM mirrors off right away and have tried a few of the CRG Mirrors, mounted to the handlebars with our Rhino bar end slider / mirror mounts. We've tried all 3 of the CRG's, including the Blindsight LS 2" mirrors, the Hindsight LS 3" mirrors, and the Arrow mirrors as well. All of them provide much better visibility than the stockers, and from a looks standpoint I think the Arrows look the best with the angular lines of the MT-09, and the small Blindsight LS 2" mirror is probably our second favorite, followed very closely by the Hindsight LS 3". You can't go wrong with any of these mirrors, however, they just make the bike look so much better, and you can actually see out of them!
LIGHTING:
On our Yamaha MT-09 project bike, we had initially installed Evotech's Fender Eliminator kit, which we really liked, and thought it improved the overall look of the bike. If you want a fender eliminator with the license plate mounted in the traditional location, the Evotech is the way to go... a real quality piece of kit. We wanted to try the NRC Fender Eliminator Kit next, along with their front LED turn signals, so that's what we currently have on the bike, and so far we really like it. The rear fender eliminator is only available with a tucked license plate location, so it really streamlines the look of the bike's tail section. The front LED turn signals are much much nicer than OEM, since they stick out about 1/2 as far, and their angled design looks nice and aggressive on the bike. We also installed 12oClockLabs Programmable Brake Light Safety Pulser, which is a simple plug-n-play device that will pulse your brake light when you apply your brakes. The pulsing is programmable so you can change it to look the way you want, and I think it's a great safety device to help make you more visible on the road. You can find those parts here...
BODY:
We haven't done many aesthetic mods to our project bike yet, but we have done a few. We did recently install an Evotech Fly Screen, just to clean up the look at the front of the bike around the headlight and TFT display. That little fly screen makes the front end look much better IMHO, and it also is much easier to just wipe that off than try to clean the bugs and road grime that seem to get all over the back of the TFT display. You can find those parts here...
EXHAUST / PERFORMANCE:
The stock MT-09 exhaust actually has a pretty nice sound to it, but has to be one of the ugliest stock exhaust systems on any bike. We decided to pull it off and try a few of the aftermarket exhaust systems. First up is the Akrapovic full exhaust, which we put on right at the end of the riding season here in Ohio, and only rode with it 1 or 2 times because we haven't had the ECU flashed yet. It looks great on the bike, was very easy to install, and has a real nice sound to it without being too loud. We are going to have the ECU flashed over the winter, probably by somebody like Vcyclenut, so stay tuned for that... this bike will be just that much better once it's de-restricted with that ECU flash. You can find those parts here...
AUGUST 2024 UPDATES - INITIAL THOUGHTS / IMPRESSIONS: Current Mileage: 250
Keep in mind, we only have about 250 miles on this bike and are still trying to run the engine in properly before the first service. That being said, it's somewhat hard to get a feel for a bike until you can really start riding it normally.
LIKES:
After about 250 miles of riding, here are some of my initial likes for the bike...
The CP3 engine has good power and a very playful character to it. This is hands down one of the best engines you'll find in a motorcycle. It has a great playful feel to it, plus it has a great soundtrack.
Transmission is excellent, not one single false neutral, and finding neutral when you want to is a breeze.
Quick Shifter works flawlessly
Unlike many modern bikes, this one has pretty good fueling and there's no surging or low RPM stumbling or snatchy on/off throttle
Bike feels very light and nimble, inspires confidence right away. Very easy to ride.
Excellent cockpit and ergos for somebody my size (5'10", 32 inseam, 170 lbs).
Wide, flat, and relatively comfortable seat.
TFT Display is excellent
You can really hear the induction noise through the top of the tank, although it's not real loud
2-position height adjustment on the footpegs. Our bike came with them in the low position. For track use, or riding real twisty roads, you can raise them up a bit if you need to for more footpeg feeler clearance with the bike leaned over.
Bridgestone S23 tires!
Brembo front brake!
DIS-LIKES:
As for my dis-likes, keep in mind, it's still early, and the bike is still mostly stock except for some protective and aesthetic mods...
Turn signal switch is funky. It doesn't work like any of my other bikes and takes some getting used to.
Unlike the base MT-09, which has a standard key, the MT-09 SP has a key fob and a knob at front of the tank that you turn on before starting the bike. I prefer a standard key like all my other bikes have, so this key fob will take some getting used to.
The stock mirrors don't offer great visibility, especially the left mirror, which leaves you staring directly at your shoulder. They're also not the nicest looking mirrors!! The first thing we did was swap these out for our CRG/Rhino mirror setup, which looks and works much much better!
The exhaust, while sounding descent for a stock bike, is one of the ugliest OEM exhaust systems out there. We'll be replacing it right away.
FIRST RIDE IMPRESSIONS:
Overall I'm very pleased with the bike after a couple rides. I've ridden many bikes with the CP3 engine, and it's still a gem, one of the best engines in motorcycling IMHO. Alot of new bikes suffer from emissions and sound related restrictions that make the bike run poorly, especially at low RPM. This bike does not seem to have any such issues though and runs pretty good. It is definitely restricted, so an ECU flash and exhaust will wake it up for sure, but it runs pretty damn good right out of the box.
The bike sounds pretty good considering it's completely stock, but it is quiet. Yamaha has special induction sound built into the front area of the tank, and you really can hear it, but it's no real substitute for a nice sounding exhaust, especially on this CP3 triple. We'll be testing out most of the exhaust systems from Akrapovic, Yoshimura, Leo Vince, etc.
The transmission is excellent, it shifted very smoothly, and I didn't experience any false neutrals. Finding neutral on the bike, which is sometimes an issue on new bikes, was a breeze. The bike has multiple ride modes and lots of electronics to play with, so I'll be getting into that a little later as I ride the bike more. The Quick Shifter works flawlessly, just like on our MT-10.
Right away I noticed how easy the bike was to ride, very light-weight feeling, nimble and confidence-inspiring. The ergo's are great for somebody my size (5'10", 32 inseam, 170 lbs) and it just felt very comfortable overall. Our bike came with the handlebars rolled back quite a bit, so I adjusted them forward some to get a little more weight over the front.
The Ohlins/KYB Suspension is fully adjustable, and with the factory settings, the bike feels pretty good. There are several roads in our area that I always pay special attention to how the suspension is reacting, and from my first couple rides, this bike is very composed over rougher sections of road and not as harsh as some of my other bikes are. I will have more opinions as I ride it more.
Brakes seem really really good, and have a nice feel to them at the lever. Excellent stopping power as well. This SP model has Brembo's so I expect them to perform pretty well.
For a stock bike, I think it looks pretty good. I know the looks are polarizing to many, especially the front end of the bike, notably the headlight. But photos don't do it justice, and in person, it's a sharp looking bike. Fit and finish is also really good. You're immediately drawn to things like the polished swingarm, which has a very high end look. The bike will definitely look much better with a tail tidy, an aftermarket exhaust, and some carbon fiber bits!
