Watch the video above to get a general overview of how we mounted the handguards on our Hypermotard 698 project bike. Pay special attention to how we positioned the handguards in relation to the clutch and brake levers, and where we positioned the handlebar clamps. You can also see how we installed optional pieces of the handguard package, like the LED flashers, mirrors, etc. Once you watch the video, continue reading below for more detailed installation info.
MOUNTING / POSITIONING THE HANDGUARDS:
Refer to the two photos above to see how we positioned the handgaurds on our Hyper 698. Depending on where your stock clutch/brake levers were positioned on the handlebars at the factory/dealership, you may need to loosen the lever assemblies, then move them in further on the handlebars, and also angle them down slightly, that way there will be clearance between the clutch/brake lever assemblies and your new handguards. The stock brake and clutch levers on the Hyper 698 are very long, and the Brembo master cylinders stick out quite a bit, so you may have to play around with positioning the lever assemblies and adjust the handguards appropriately. If you’ve installed aftermarket levers, you may not need to re-position anything, depending on their size.
On our Hyper 698 project bike with the stock levers, which are kind of long, we moved the levers in about 1/4" on the handlebars, and we have the levers angled down slightly. Once you do this, you can get the handguards installed pretty easily, with adequate clearance.
We’ve also installed aftermarket levers from Evotech Performance and ASV to see how they fit with the handguards. With their "shorty" levers, you have more room and clearance is better than with longer stock length levers. We also tried Evotech and ASV's standard length levers, which both are similar length to stock, and those fit fine as well, we just had to move the levers in slightly on the bars like we did with the stock Ducati levers.
HANDLEBAR CLAMPS:
Refer to the photo above to see how we positioned the handguard clamps on our Hyper 698. Notice that we've installed the included spacers on the clamps to push the handguard out a bit to provide more clearance for the levers. Even with those spacers installed, be especially aware of clutch/brake lever clearance with the handguards. The Hyper 698 has large lever perches that stick out quite a bit, so you will want to angle your levers down slightly so that the outer most part of the levers and perches do not contact the handguards.
AFTER INSTALLATION:
Once you have everything installed, make sure the handguard clamps are tight, as well as the inserts in the ends of the handlebars. Also make sure the handguards do not move or rotate on the handlebars. Check these bolts periodically to make sure they stay tight.
Also make sure there is adequate clearance between the clutch and brake levers and the handguards. This is CRITICAL.
Finally, make sure the throttle tube and grip have adequate clearance with the handguard, and the throttle moves freely, and does not stick. This is also CRITICAL.
INSTALLING OPTIONAL "HYPER 698" GRAPHICS:
If you purchased the optional "Hyper 698" Graphics, installation is very simple. We recommend the following:
Peel off the Zeta decals that are on the Zeta XC Protectors
Clean the plastic Zeta XC protectors with an alcohol wipe or plastic cleaner, dry thoroughly, then apply the decals
Once applied, use a hair dryer or heat gun (on low setting) to heat the decals to warm up the adhesive, especially around the edges. This will ensure that they stick properly and stay put over time. Keep the hair dryer/heat gun atleast 6" from the vinyl.
The plastic protectors have several areas where the decal may not want to stick, that is where you use heat to warm the vinyl up, then press it into place so that it forms to the plastic protector.
INSTALLING OPTIONAL INTEGRATED LED TURN SIGNALS:
If you purchased the optional Integrated LED Turn Signals with the handguards, follow the general instructions below...
NOTE: Do not leave your ignition on when wiring up turn signals. Only work on your bikes wiring when the ignition is OFF. Otherwise you can blow fuses.
1. Remove plastic headlight shroud to get to front turn signal wiring harness
2. Remove each OEM front turn signal. Follow wiring from the turn signal to where it plugs in at the harness. Before un-plugging each turn signal, mark the left and right locations for each turn signal connections on the harness, so you will know which is right and which is left when you go to plug in the new LED flashers
3. Most of the time, the Zeta LED modules will be pre-mounted to the plastic Zeta XC Protectors. But if the LED's come lose in the packaging, mount them using the included hardware.
4. Mount the Zeta XC Protectors to the aluminum handguards, run the LED wiring down the handguard and follow existing bike wiring back behind the dashboard to where the front signal harness is.
5. Connect the Ducati turn signal connector plugs to the Zeta handguard LED wires. There are multiple ways you can do this. We include heat shrink butt connectors, which is what we used on our bike, so you can use those if you want. Some will want to solder the connections, so that is another option. Once the plugs are connected to the Zeta LED wires, you can use electrical tape or something similar to wrap around the wiring and connectors.
7. Plug the LED wiring in to the front turn signal harness just like the stock signals were. Hopefully you marked the left and right as we suggested above so that you know to connect them that way. If not, just plug them in and turn the signals on to see if the proper side flashes. Once connected, we suggest zip tie-ing the LED wires at various points so they stay put.
8. Once plugged in, test the turn signals before buttoning everything back up. Also make sure your rear turn signals are still flashing properly. Finally, move your handlebars back and forth to full lock, making sure the new wiring does not hinder handlebar movement.
