MOUNTING AFTERMARKET BAR END MIRRORS ON YOUR KAWASAKI Z900RS:
The stock mirrors are one of the very first things we usually replace on our project bikes, for a couple reasons. First, they usually don't look that great, and secondly, many stock OEM mirrors don't provide the best visibility, oftentimes no matter how I adjust them, I'm looking at my shoulders. This was exactly the case with our Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe project bike, and we definitely wanted to replace the stock mirrors not only for the better look, but also improved functionality and visibility. On previous project bike builds we've used a combination of Rhino Moto bar end slider / mirror mounts, along with CRG Bar End mirrors. You simply can't go wrong with products from these two companies, and we probably have their products on 4 or 5 of our builds.
Rhino Moto Bar End Sliders:
These trick parts from Rhino Moto, as shown in photo above, not only act as mounts for your mirrors, but they also act as sliders and protect the ends of your handlebars in the event of a drop or crash. Installation is very simple since these are designed to thread into the threaded inserts in the ends of the stock Z900RS / Cafe handlebars. All you do is remove the stock bar ends, which are mounted into the ends of the handlebar with allen screws. Once those are removed, the Rhino Bar Ends insert into the ends of the handlebars, and the included long bolts thread right in to the threaded inserts that are inside the handlebars. Once mounted, they are very solid.
CRG Mirrors:
We tested several different CRG bar end mirrors on our Kawasaki Z900RS project bike. All of these mirrors have clamps that will fit directly into the channel on each of the Rhino Bar Ends discussed above, to secure them to the mounts. If you want a traditional round mirror, go with either the 2" CRG Blindsight LS folding mirror, or the 3" Hindsight LS folding mirrors. Because the bodywork and tank on the Z900RS has more of a rounded shape, we liked the look of these round mirrors from CRG, and ended up going with the CRG Blindsight LS mirrors on our project bike, as shown in the photos above. Another option would be the CRG Arrow mirrors, but those tend to look better on bikes with more of an angular design to the bodywork, like a Yamaha MT-09 for example.
All of these mirrors provide excellent visibility and do not vibrate. Additionally the LS style folding mirrors, and the Arrow mirrors, can be folded out of the way when necessary.
Mirror Hole Plugs:
One thing to note, when you install these mirrors on the Z900RS, you'll pull off the bikes stock mirrors, which then leaves the threaded holes in the clutch and brake lever perches. So, we also offer optional Kawasaki Z900RS Mirror Hole Plugs to plug the holes left when removing the stock mirrors, They're available in several colors, we went with Gold on our bike. See photo above.
Which mirrors look best on the Kawasaki Z900RS / Cafe?
We get this question alot. Looks are obviously subjective, but we think the round shape of the CRG Blindsight LS or Hindsight LS mirrors best matches the rounded body lines and gas tank on the Z900RS and Cafe. Our personal favorite would be the 2" round CRG Blindsight LS, which is a mirror we use on several of our project bikes, including our Z900RS Cafe. Don't let the small size fool you, they provide excellent visibility. But If you want something slightly larger than the Blindsight LS, go with the 3" round CRG Hindsight LS. All of these CRG mirrors look much much better than the stock mirrors, and they are more functional as well since you can see much better out of a bar end style mirror.
