Scott Giles
Scott started SCCA Autocrossing and Drivers Schools at Road Atlanta (the old "Track Days" program) back in 1995 driving his GS-R in bone stock form. It was terrible, weak brakes and BAD understeer. He worked up to Advanced (solo) driver by 1996 and began to make minor modifications to the car such as brake pads, sway bars, exhaust, and better tires. In 1997 Scott decided to start SCCA Solo I competition. He added a roll bar, harness and other required safety equipment. He ended up finishing 3rd in CSP in the
Southeast Division that year. Car modifications continued over the next few years, as the driver improved as well. Scott won the SEDIV Solo I Championship in '98 (CSP), '99 (reclassed to DSP), and also 2000. He set 7 track lap records in the process. Later he began instructing for BMWCCA, PCA, and NASA spending anywhere from 12 to 15 weekends per year at a track, airfeild or hillclimb somewhere.
In 2001 Scott could no longer resist the urge to go wheel to wheel racing, but he was driving a rather uncompetitive SCCA ITS car and couldn't afford to make it
competitive. That's when Scott and friend Karl Schultz decided to start the Honda Challenge race series. They saw an opportunity for cars that were not well classed by the SCCA, such as the Acura Integra Type R, Honda Prelude VTEC, and Hybrids, as well as folks who didn't feel they could be competitive or afford racing in the SCCA Improved Touring classes. Because of this, the Honda Challenge was born.
