We weren't big fans of the stock plastic handguards that come on the Hypermotard 698. They don't offer much in the way of protection, and for such a nice looking motorcycle, the handguards looked cheap and out of place. Plus they are attached to the expensive Brembo clutch and brake master cylinders, which makes them vulnerable in a drop. Personally, I also like to angle my clutch and brake levers slightly downward, and with the handguards attached to the lever assemblies, they move along with the levers, and the handguards end up pointed down at the ground. It just didn't look right at all.
We run the Zeta PRO Armor handguards on several of our project bikes, so we decided to try and fit them up to the Hyper 698. After some trial and error using various types of Zeta mounting hardware, we were able to get a package together that we're pretty happy with. These Zeta PRO Armor handguards look much better than the cheap plastic stock guards, plus they are actually functional and will offer good protection for the bikes controls and your hands. The plastic sliders on the outer edge of the aluminum will also provide additional protection in a tip over or low side. There are also some nice options you can add to these, like integrated LED turn signals, integrated mirrors, and also our "Hyper 698" graphics that really set them off from a looks standpoint.
Watch the video above to get a general overview of how we mounted the handguards on our Hypermotard 698 project bike. Pay special attention to how we positioned the handguards in relation to the clutch and brake levers, and where we positioned the handlebar clamps. You can also see how we installed optional pieces of the handguard package, like the LED flashers, mirrors, etc.
