Installing Cycra Ultra Probend CRM Handguards on a Suzuki DRZ4S / DRZ4SM

Our Dilemma:
The easiest handguards to fit up to the new Suzuki DRZ4S / DRZ4SM are the Barkbusters Handguards for Suzuki DRZ4, since those are designed to work with the stock DRZ4's threaded handlebar inserts (which make installing universal fit handguards a challenge since those require a hollow ended handlebar). One issue we ran into with the Barkbusters however, is that they are not compatible with the Supermoto Mirrors we have installed on our Suzuki DRZ4SM Project Bike. Basically, the handlebar clamps that Barkbusters uses must be mounted directly next to the clutch and brake lever perches, which is exactly where our Supermoto Mirrors have to be mounted, and there really is no room on the bike's stock handlebars for both.

So we started looking at other handguards that might fit with our Supermoto Mirrors, and here's what we found...

Cycra Ultra Probend CRM (Center Reach Mount) Handguards:
On our DRZ4SM Project Bike, we ended up trying to fit a set of Cycra Ultra Probend CRM Handguards, which are a Center Reach Mount (CRM) design... the handlebar clamps are 1 1/8" size and attach over next to the handlebar mounts towards the center of the bars. The overall shape of these handguards fits well with the DRZ4's front brake reservoir, front brake line, and clutch cable, plus the center mounted clamps will allow us to keep our Supermoto Mirrors mounted to the handlebars. Basically these handguards ended up fitting the bike perfectly!

Only one problem... those threaded inserts in the ends of the stock DRZ4's handlebars won't allow you to mount these handguards with the included handlebar insert kit, which is an expanding insert designed for hollow ended handlebars.

So, In order to get the Cycra's to fit with those M12 threaded inserts in the handlebar ends, we had to use two different products...

M12 to M8 Reducers / Adapters (with 1.25 thread)
The first thing you need to do to get the Cycra handguards to fit is convert the bikes stock handlebar inserts (which are M12 size) to an M8 size, that way you can use the M8 size hardware that most handguards use to secure the handguards to the ends of the handlebar. You can find M12 to M8 reducers / adapters on Amazon, eBay or probably even your local Home Depot that you can thread into the bikes M12 size handlebar inserts. If you search Amazon or eBay for "M12 to M8 reducer" or "M12 to M8 adapter" you will find a few different options. The ones we ended up using (see photo) have a lip on the end that, once you thread them into the handlebar inserts, tightens against the edge of the handlebar, so it works out nicely. Make sure they have a 1.25 thread.

Zeta Armor Handguard Option Bar End Plugs:
So now that you have the handlebar inserts converted to an M8 size, you could typically use the long M8 bolts that come with the Cycra handguards expanding insert kit. But what we ran into on our DRZ4SM when we tried to use the Cycra long bolts, is that they bottomed out on something inside the bikes handlebars before we could get them tight... so they were basically too long. We decided to use Zeta's Armor Handguard Option Bar End Plugs (see photo above), which basically fit over the ends of Zeta handguards (and also Cycra's) and butt up against the edge of the handlebars, making for a stronger fit, but what's really nice is that they also come with 2 different length M8 bolts, and we were able to use the shorter bolts to secure the handguards to our bikes handlebars. They didn't bottom out like the Cycra bolts did.

Done.

It's a bit of extra work to get these Cycra's fitted, but we're really happy with the end result. These handguards fit the DRZ4 perfectly, and go around all the cables, lines, and even that pesky front brake reservoir / brake line, which caused us some problems trying to fit another set of handguards. AND the Cycra's are compatible with our Supermoto Mirrors as well. So if you want to run our Supermoto Mirrors, definitely consider the Cycra Ultra Probend CRM Handguards!

  • Fitment Note: Cycra also makes a slightly less expensive CRM handguard called the Cycra Probend™ CRM Racer Pack for 1-1/8" Handlebars. Those handguards are a Center Reach Mount design too, but use different style handlebar clamps than the Ultra Probend CRM handguards we installed on our DRZ4SM project bike, and won't fit as well on the Suzuki DRZ4 models.
